It was an announcement 6 months in the making!
Today, Adventure Aquarium biologists – with help from penguin parents Kali and Tyson, of course – revealed the gender of six month old African penguin Casanova, who was born at the Aquarium on January 11, 2013. Since there is no visible difference between male and female African penguins, at Adventure Aquarium, gender is determined by a DNA test when the penguin has reached six months of age.
For the event, a crowd of Aquarium visitors gathered in Critter Courtyard next to Penguin Island. Visitors even joined the festivities by “dressing their guess” and picking either “girl” or “boy” for the chance to win a private meet & greet with Casanova.
Mom Kali made the special announcement by stepping into a tray of penguin-safe paint and waddling across a pristine, white canvas – leaving behind tiny pink (yes – pink) footprints, revealing to the world that Casanova is indeed…a GIRL!

The excitement continued over on Penguin Island, as Cassie (as she will now be called) – along with the rest of the penguin colony – were treated to specially-designed, pink heart-shaped “fishsicles,” on Penguin Island in celebration of today’s announcement!
It was a big day for Cassie, as today marks her first official date on exhibit at Adventure Aquarium; which means…you’ll have the opportunity to meet her up close during your next visit! So be sure to stop by and say hi. You will be able to tell Cassie from the other penguins because she will be dark bluish grey and white in color, instead of the traditional black and white. Oh, and she LOVES swimming; so more than likely, she’ll be in the pool at Penguin Island!
