On January 11, Adventure Aquarium welcomed a baby African Penguin chick. Here’s an update on the adorable chick’s progress:

Our little chick is doing really well! Hatched 15 days ago on January 11, the chick is getting bigger and stronger with each day – weighing in today at whopping 1 pound, 3 oz. When hatched, it only weighed in at 60 grams. Can you imagine your own baby growing that quickly?! It spends the majority of its day with its mom-Kali, and dad-Tyson, who take turns feeding and keeping him warm.

Adventure Aquarium husbandry staff members do daily check-ups with the tiny penguin each morning, including checking its wings and feet.

Tummy time! Like human babies, a baby penguin spends a great amount of its time on its stomach. It will be several weeks before it’s able to stand on its own.

As part of its daily check-up, the chick wakes up every morning to be weighed by Adventure Aquarium’s husbandry team on a digital scale. Today’s weight: 1 pound, 3 oz!
