African Penguin Awareness Weekend

Make plans to visit Adventure Aquarium October 13-14 for African Penguin Awareness Weekend– an event dedicated to everyone’s favorite tuxedo-wearing, flightless feathered friends! All weekend long, participate in an array of penguin-centric activities, all of which help promote the conservation of African Black-Footed Penguins:

  • Meet an African Penguin during special, up-close penguin appearances and speak with biologists about these adorable sea birds!
  • Take a photo with a real African Penguin during one of the daily photography sessions hosted by Adventure Aquarium’s H2o Photo.
  • See original penguin artwork in a Gallery setting with the opportunity to purchase original works of art created by Adventure Aquarium’s African Penguins.
  • Learn more about Adventure Aquarium’s Penguin Adoption Program, which allows guest to adopt their very own African Penguin (includes a certificate of adoption, a penguin fact sheet and color photo, and an original penguin painting created by their adopted penguin).
  • For a $1 donation, guests can purchase their very own penguin footprint to sign and hang up inside Adventure Aquarium to show their support for these flightless, feathered friends.
  • Make a free penguin craft project to take home.

The best part? A portion of the proceeds from the sale of Penguin Paintings and Penguin Adoptions, as well as the proceeds from the sale of penguin footprints, will go directly to support SANCCOB, which has helped treat more than 82,000 sick, injured, orphaned and oiled sea birds throughout the last four decades.

And, for each purchase during Adventure Aquarium’s Penguin Awareness Weekend that benefits SANCCOB (penguin paintings, adoptions, and footprints) Adventure Aquarium guests will receive an “I helped save a penguin today” sticker (while supplies last).

African Penguin Awareness Weekend was initiated in 2009 by the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB), a non-profit sea bird rehabilitation centre based in Cape Town, South Africa that aims to conserve and protect South Africa’s threatened sea birds. And as an ongoing supporter of SANCOBB, Adventure Aquarium’s goals in hosting it very own “African Penguin Awareness Weekend” is to raise both funds and awareness in support of this loved, yet vulnerable, species.
